The PenMount PCI Advantage in the Medical Field

PenMount projected capacitive (PCI or PCAP) touch controllers can provide system products in medical environments which are highly stable and highly reliable. Why can feature-laden PenMount PCI controllers satisfy customers’ medical application requirements? We will share the details with you in this issue of PenMount Bulletin.

Customers in the medical field have very rigorous reliability standards for PCI touch products. In terms of medical equipment and instruments, a number of renowned medical equipment manufacturers require related items to pass medical safety IEC 60601-1-2 Ver. 4 criteria. In addition to passing IEC 60601-1-2 Ver. 4 testing, PCI touch controllers and firmware provided by PenMount can meet the two following medical radiated susceptibility and conducted susceptibility testing standards.

  • IEC 61000-4-3 Radiated fields and Proximity Fields 9 ~ 28V/m
  • IEC 61000-4-6 Conducted Radio Frequency Immunity

In previous issues of PenMount Bulletin, we have continuously noted that PenMount PCI touch controllers’ advanced water handling function. Since the dielectric constant of different liquids are distinct, if various liquids are present on the touch surface, the touch panel will be prone to generating false touch signals if the controller does not provide special signal processing. However, no false touch signals occur when PenMount PCI controllers detect water on the touch panel. Touch panels are very likely to be splashed by saline or blood in environments where medical instruments are used. No false touch signals are generated when PenMount PCI controllers detect these liquids. This advanced water handling feature greatly enhances the reliability of PCI products which is also our ultimate goal.

In addition, silicone or latex gloves are frequently used in medical environments. In real life situations, medical personnel may wear five or more layers of gloves. With this many layers of latex gloves, the signal received by the PenMount PCI controller will be weaker but the PenMount PCI controller’s high signal-to-noise ratio is maintained, while taking into account the water handling mechanism, to achieve no false touch signals in the presence of water, saline, and blood and gloved operation of the touch panel. We hope to provide medical personnel with safe and reliable PCI touch solutions and this is our contribution to caring for health care workers.
