AMT PCAP Touchscreen Anti-ESD Solution

10/31/2023 | Bulletin No. : AMTNE23010

In general, Electronic products require electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. The voltage resistance of the IC electronic components used in these products is usually lower than ±2 kV, which makes these IC components susceptible to ESD from the environment or human contact. If the released voltage exceeds the component’s tolerance, it can damage the electronic circuit, resulting in product failure or equipment malfunctioning. AMT introduces a new anti-ESD solution by applying an exclusive anti-ESD coating to the surface of the cover glass of touch panels, enhancing their ESD protection capabilities!

Unique ESD Protection Design From AMT

ESD protection design can be done through conductive grounding or charge dissipation. Between these two methods, grounding is the most prevailing approach for ESD protection in projected capacitive (PCAP) touch panels. AMT’s PCAP touch panels feature a specially designed circuit that directs electrostatic discharges to the ground when they occur. Additionally, we have incorporated an anti-ESD circuit design in the touch controller to safeguard the product’s signal lines and electronic components from ESD damage. Many of our opponents’ touch products don’t incorporate the ESD protection design. Even when they do, their product could shield the touch panel against high-voltage ESD strikes.

AMT Exclusive Anti-ESD Coating

AMT recognizes our customers’ needs and has developed anti-ESD coating that can be applied to glass. This coating makes the surface resistance of the cover glass within the range of 107 to 1010 ohm/sq, which disperses or evenly distributes electrostatic charges. As a result, it gradually transfers and dissipates ESD to other conductive elements, such as air or moisture. This prevents direct ESD from entering electronic components and effectively enhances ESD protection. Additionally, the conductive glass’s high resistance facilitates ESD’s rapid dissipation into the surrounding air, reducing charge accumulation and extending the product’s lifespan.

Compliance With Stringent Testing Standards

We tested PCAP touch products with anti-ESD coating on glass surfaces using electrostatic test standard IEC 61000-4-2. These tests demonstrated that irrespective of whether the cover glass has its anti-ESD layer grounded, it can pass high-voltage tests for air discharge at ±30 kV and contact discharge at ±30 kV. The results show that the products remain undamaged and their electrical functionality remains intact.

AMT’s anti-ESD solution can minimize ESD accumulation and expedite ESD dissipation. It enhances products’ safety and stability and is suitable for a wide range of applications, particularly in environments prone to electrostatic discharge or in machinery involving high-speed rotational friction.
