With the simultaneous global rollout of the latest Windows 10 operating system allowing all Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade for free, many customers have inquired whether PenMount projected capacitive (PCI or PCAP) touch controllers can support the Windows 10 operating system. In addition, the increasing ubiquity of Linux and Android among industrial applications has driven the swift growth of functionality when paired with PenMount PCI touch controllers. In this month’s installment of PenMount Bulletin, we will describe in detail PenMount PCI touch controller driver support for these operating systems.

The PenMount device driver for Windows desktop systems supports only x86, while Windows CE, Linux, and Android can run on the x86 and ARM architectures. Thus, we will further differentiate the driver status of these two different architectures when applied to the USB and RS-232 interfaces.

  1. Running Windows, Linux, and Android on x86 Architecture

(A) USB Interface:

Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 utilize a digitizer interface for USB HID devices (INBOX DRIVER). In terms of USB, plug and play functionality is very convenient. In addition, Linux Kernel 3.0 or higher and Android version 4.0 or higher have built-in HID multitouch drivers. This means driver installation is not necessary and is an easier way to use PCI products.

(B) RS-232 Interface:

By installing the PenMount Universal Driver in the Windows operating system, users can choose whether  the device is set as a digitizer or mouse interface. If using RS-232 in Linux or Android, we will provide corresponding drivers.

There is no built-in INBOX DRIVER supplied with the Win CE operating system. So, PenMount Standard or Stylus drivers must be installed for both USB and RS-232 interfaces.

In terms of systems using earlier Linux 2.6 kernel versions or those not using X-Window, please contact us and we will provide the service required for your build.

  1. Linux and Android running on non-x86 architecture can support USB INBOX DRIVER versions and do not need additional drivers. In addition to selecting a corresponding PenMount driver in the WinCE operating system, if you wish to use other controllers utilizing the RS-232 interface on a non-x86 architecture that does not support the USB INBOX DRIVER, you must contact our sales window. PenMount will provide the service required for you to build your own driver.
