PenMount Sets the Standard for Environmental Adaptability

09/27/2018 | Bulletin No. : PMY18009

The PenMount Team regularly enhances PenMount hardware, firmware, and software with the latest innovations.  PenMount’s many breakthroughs in noise immunity have made our standard projected capacitive (PCAP or PCI) touch products the most adaptable and easy to install touch solutions on the market.  PenMount products are “plug & play” and our standard controller firmware constantly adapts to changing environmental conditions to provide optimal noise immunity at all times.

When a system integrator laminates PCAP panel to LCD and installs this module into their system, the noise environment from the perspective of the controller changes.  If this system is then moved to multiple locations, the noise profile will change further.  PenMount frequency hopping is built to automatically adapt to current noise conditions to achieve optimal noise immunity with minimal tuning of firmware and parameters.  All firmware adjustment can be performed onsite without need for factory servicing.

One of PenMount’s recent projects involved integrating a PCAP touch solution into an industrial saw.  The low frequency interference caused by the saw’s motor was an obstacle that frustrated another touch solution provider for many months.  As soon as the customer installed a standard PenMount PCAP touch solution, our superior frequency hopping compensated for the saw motor.  We successfully resolved this issue for the customer and delivered a seamless touch experience. In terms of mission critical systems, it is often impossible for customers to return assembled systems to the factory for servicing.  PenMount noise adaptability means the only required parameters are panel size and cover lens thickness.  Our standard firmware does the rest with simple adjustments (such as sensitivity) performed onsite.

Other controllers use a standard frequency hopping methodology which requires specifying an initial working frequency.  In order to set the working frequency, the noise effects of LCD and system must be known.  This means products must be returned to the factory after customers have bonded their touch panels where special programs are used to determine noise frequency bandwidth and working frequency set to avoid it.  This does not take into account environmental noise, so additional tuning may be necessary at the operating location.  This method increases both the time required to bring a system online and the ability of the system to adapt to different environments.

PenMount’s unique frequency hopping technology automatically finds and uses an working frequency unaffected by noise.  If noise frequency changes, the PenMount frequency hopping mechanism automatically switches to another unaffected frequency.  This function provides PenMount PCAP total touch solutions with adaptability to noise other solutions cannot match. Standard PenMount PCAP touch solutions are “plug & play” and adapt automatically in any noise environment.

Customers using PenMount total touch solutions do not require engineers to learn all the minutia of firmware tuning.  PenMount PCAP touch solutions do not have to be sent back to us just to activate noise immunity.  Please contact us for further details of what PenMount controllers can achieve for your project.
